Today’s animal facts are on the Australian Seal Lions!! We see these puppies of the sea out on Seal Island and West Island. They are usually lounging around on the rocks, warming there body’s up in the sun, or jumping around playing in the water! The males are large weighing up to 350kgs. They are the only known endemic pinniped (family name) species in Australia found in SA and WA.
The known population of sea lions is between 9000, to 12,500 and population numbers are not increasing.
There are usually fewer than 25 sea lion pups born annually and this number continues to decline. The sea lions we see on our tours are not at breeding sites, these are places where sea lions come to ‘hangout’ usually juveniles that aren’t ready to breed.
We love all of our animals that we see on the Duck and these guys are definitely a favourite. Comment below if you have seen these guys before!
