I have been learning a bunch about Alsace Riesling. Unlike German Riesling, it is defined as dry.
2018 Julien Schaal @julien.schaal.wines
“Schoenenbourg Gypse" Riesling Grand Cru Alsace. Gypsum refers to the soil, as Alsatian wines are very terroir-expressive, fresh, vibrant, mineral, and with the depth.
Born in Alsace, Julien Schaal was able to make his brand out of the 12 Grand Crus where he makes wine for other négociant. Although the land is small, each expression has its own crus. Gypse is only one of the six Rieslings he offers, in addition to the flavor I mentioned above, ripe peach, and a hint of honey and tropical fruit. High acidity with decisive structure. This bottle will age well. Alsace wines are also known to have smoke notes as they age, well worth it.
I have another expression from Julien Schaal, looking forward to pairing it with some food this weekend.
Let me know if you have any Alsatian riesling and rose to recommend. I would love to learn more about its wine production!
