Heyy! So, this is a bit late, but yesterday was the Transgender Day of Visibility. I keep my status as a trans woman intentionally clear in my bio, but its good sometimes to highlight it too. I know highlighting is not something everyone agrees to, both some cis and trans people alike, and we all know the narratives about for example Pride that why do us LGBTQ+ - people need to keep flaunting our sexualities and genders and so on. Personally I don't feel like we are "there" or nowhere near "there" yet so there will be a need for raising these issues for a long time still.
Not all trans people have the safety to be visible, and even for me visibility doesn't mean that in my everyday life I go and introduce myself as a trans woman or talk about trans issues all the time. But its a question that affects each and all of us all the time in some ways no matter if we are "stealth" or not, and I too have felt it in my life as transphobia, cissexism, transmisogyny and so on, both personally and through my loved ones who some are trans.
We lose jobs, we are not selected for this&that, and so on. Statistically a biiiig part of trans people and especially trans women live well below the poverty line. Even recently I lost a comission due to being trans, and within circus and performing world and the fetish world I will lose more in the future. But its what it is, and the only way is forward. I am doing my very small part for my trans siblings by choosing to be visible and out as much as I can.
I know at the moment we also have bigger problems to tackle. But I think one battle doesn't erase others which also still continue. On the contrary, COVID19 is actually making the situation worse for many trans people, as many of us are suddenly facing difficulties for getting treated, are demanded IDs when going outside and not all have congruent IDs matching their presentations, and so on. Some states are using covid measures as an excuse for making totalitarian changes to their governments, which is always super dangerous for us.
But I still hope the world is going forward and we will all bounce back from this. Stay safe everyone! 🖤
