I am finding it increasingly difficult to follow my decision of sticking with sustainable fashion, whenever I feel like shopping. People who know me, know how much I love shopping. I used to be an impulsive shopper but have reduced considerably over the past few months. Two people I would love to give credit to are @fashionandfrappes @drapeastory
So, what is sustainability actually? Why is everyone talking about it? Wiki says its the ability to co-exist, constantly. Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. Whenever I read articles which say that the earth will have no water by the end of 20XX or the level of pollution is the highest in the last five years, it hurts. Honestly speaking, I would not have given it much thought, had I not been a mom (cause kal kisne dekha hai, right?) but now I worry about the world where my son will grow up and continue to live. There are over 1.8 million times that the hashtag sustainability has been used this year on Instagram alone! The best thing about this wave of change is that individuals as well as brands are adopting the principle to go green. But that’s not the case with all brands. I was shocked to read that textile manufacturing uses huge amounts of water, much of which gets flushed into waterways laden with contaminants like bleaches, acids, inks and dyes. A single cotton shirt uses 2,700 litres of water!! Can you imagine?! Fast fashion brands are environment's numero uno enemy and I can just do my bit by not shopping from them. I remember how my parents insisted on quality every time they went to shop. They re-used and recycled a lot more than us. Why don’t we just do that? Though I have always believed in quantity over quality and would rather buy two garments in a thousand bucks than one, I am willing to change cause it comes down to what we are leaving for the generations to come. Since, there are not a lot of options when it comes to eco-conscious brands, I prefer not to spend my money on clothes these days. I have started carrying my own bottle wherever I go. I have and will continue to rent clothes for weddings n parties. And exchange.
