I wanted the year to fully come to an end before talking about my favorites of 19'. Now that 2020 has arrived, during the month of January I will be writing 1)my favorite releases in general 2) later in the month a Final Hour specific regional favorites list - spanning the Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado region and highlighting mostly killer unsigned/independent bands.
It was fitting to have such a monumental year for Death Metal. If I was pressed to talk about what has defined the past decade in the world of Metal, it would have to be the seismic wave of OSDM bands. I am not going to talk that, because you most likely have heard their well earned praises elsewhere.
Death Metal releases: 1)Rendered Helpless 🇳🇿- Suffer, Seraphim
A glorious find in a sub-genre that I really don't usually enjoy. "Slam" has never really been my thing, but man has this record been a joy to discover. The riff phrasing is slowly wrung out but never boring, with the drums underneath it all, with lots of cool push and pull dynamics. There are even some subtle keyboard moments and a cohesive narrative arch to the lyrics. When Suffer launches into full boar blasting, it comes at just the right time, reminding you that this is technically a Death Metal release. A real surprise.
