One of the most asked questions I get in DMs is: How do I get my toddler to play independently? . This isn't always easy but it's also important to note that there are several different types of play, meaning that your toddler wont always be in the mindset for solo play - but more on that another day! . The short answer for fostering independent is to set up your play space. Environment is the third teacher, so having a well organised play corner is crucial if you want (or need) your toddler to play independently. . Just before Z turned two, I really focused on turning a corner of our lounge room into a play space for her. It became something we really needed because I was heavily pregnant with her little brother at the time and I knew that I wouldn't always be able to play with her, especially during feeds. . Age depending, setting up invitations to play can also work really well. Now Z is almost 4 (and doesn't nap), I'll often set her up with an invitation whilst i'm settling her younger brother. Popular choices include: play dough, art, building with magnetic tiles and sensory play at the Flisat table. . I think it's also important to note that children will often feel more secure if they are closer to you whilst playing so whilst setting up a separate play room might work well for some, other children may need to be in a nearby space to play independently. . Current Reality... We have a one month old baby. It’s been crazy, emotional, and all the things a newborn baby brings. Mr. Bartels has been traveling for the past 2 weeks (awful, I know) which has brought its own level of hard. Our fall decorations are still up. There are pumpkins on the mantel and front porch. Our Christmas tree is finally up (thanks mom & dad), the lights were eventually strung, and there are 3 ornaments on the tree. I’m slowly accepting the fact that this year, our tree might look like this. It might not be picture perfect. The house might not be picture perfect. But that’s all ok. It’s worth it if it means I get to keep my sanity, enjoy baby snuggles, and give Blakely some extra attention while she adjusts to life as a big sister. This is the current status here in our home. It was just over 2 years ago when @dmjdxb and I went away for a few days without the kids. The first couple of times, yes we felt guilty, I mean they were small and it was hard to explain to them. They just turned 7, it’s still hard and this time as much as we can now explain to them they can also now express their feelings much better too. There were tears 😭, a lot of them, when I put them to bed before we left. They asked why, why must you go without us?? I was very honest when it came to answering them. I am so proud at how they listened. Before them, it was just the two of us. We love them with all our heart but to be happy parents we also need time alone, like we had before. We need quiet adult time to keep a check on, recharge and reconnect with each other. We also explained there are also some occasions in special people’s lives ( this case was a 40th birthday) that it’s important to be a part of and share those moments with these people. But the TRUTH is if I looked back over the last 60 days and I saw how many times I’d stopped and bought myself a coffee or grabbed dinner out with the family, it added up to more than enough! . . I told myself the lie that I can’t share on social media. But the TRUTH is, I just needed to find a way to share that was true to me and my life. . . Our lies lead to choices. I was challenged earlier this week by a dear sister to not be afraid to be a parent. Parents are called to teach, love, discipline and a bunch of other adjectives. But a combination of self doubt and skewed perception had me relinquishing some of my duties. I would write it off as no big deal but these small compromises will culminate to aiming these arrows in a direction I never intended. Don't let your children suffer because you'd rather be liked by them today or because you refuse to address your own shame/insecurities. Get healthy (in all the ways). Be courageous. What is it about Walkie Talkies that make you feel like a giant kid again. On our last recent hikes together, I’ve used our walkie talkies on the trails because the kids being kids love running ahead of me, rushing past every turn, jumping off rocks (Kai has recently been indulging in parkour videos GULP), and hearing their laughs slowly fade into the distance until I hear a random “MOM!” So I invested in some pretty great walkie talkies, the boys eyes lit up and I handed them one and one for myself, knelt down and explained how to use “over” and “roger” properly and how to keep the button down when you speak, clear and concise. The first 10 minutes was great! Parents walking by “what a great idea!” “Oh the kiddos must love those” and in the middle of a conversation with other parents I hear Kai on the walkie and he proceeds to tell me “mom, I think LA needs to fart or take a dump”......(insert heavy Krusty the clown sigh) I excuse myself and make my way to Kai and Laik wrestling in the dirt.... I get eager waiting for the response from the other walkie, I love the codes, I love the cross talk, I love seeing the excitement of the kids hiding behind one bush and the other making small chit chat.
