I hear from a lot of parents concerned about serving fruit. Whether they're worried that their kid only wants to eat fruit when they have it, or concerned that if they give their baby fruit then they won't learn to like any vegetables, it runs the gamut!
So if you have any questions like these, hopefully this helps! At the end of the day, fruit is full of a ton of beneficial nutrients! Yes, they tend to be sweet. But that isn't a bad thing. Don't think of fruit as a sugar, think of it on par with veggies! Really!
Fruits have a lot of the same vitamins and minerals that veggies do, and because they generally have a lot of fiber, the naturally occurring sugar in them isn't absorbed quickly into our blood. Meaning that the effect is very different than actual added sugar, and not something to worry about!
I recommend alternating fruits and vegetables throughout the day like I'm showing here. If you only serve veggies, then your child is missing out on so many things from fruit! And let's be honest, fruit is delicious! We want our children to enjoy their meals, and fruit is a great way to do that.
Some recent research talking about global diets actually referenced the fact that people don't get enough fruit in their diet as adults, and that can be associated with more disease. So teaching your kids to like fruits is not a bad thing, I promise!
If you recall the way I recommend building a plate, I recommend an iron-rich food, a high calorie food, and a fruit or veggie. Serve one or the other with a meal, they are all equal when it comes down to it.
