The murder of George Floyd was not shocking. Horrendous, despicable, racist, brutal, inhumane ... but not shocking. It keeps happening. It comes as no surprise. Rodney King was beaten to a pulp almost 30 yrs ago, and the LA riots when the police who did it were acquitted led to death, destruction & suffering that is barely remembered. Nothing has changed. Police Officers kill Black Americans with impunity - that is a legally established, government sanctioned fact.
I apologize to all Black Americans. I am ashamed of my race. I am ashamed of the US. I am ashamed of 400 years of oppression that have been put upon my neighbors, friends and fellow humans. Eric Garner told the Staten Island police officer “I can’t breathe” 11 times before he died. All on video. And nothing changes. How far has this country come since the days of slavery, rape and lynching? America, hang your head in shame.
Breonna Taylor was at home minding her own business, shot 8 times by police officers. Oscar Grant was "unarmed & cooperative" and shot dead. Tamir Rice was 12 yrs old when he was shot dead by a police officer. The list goes on and on. Who the hell do these power-hungry, violent cops think they are? They do not represent me. How many more generations of Black Americans will have to endure being told they are worthless. I stand with Black Americans. I stand with First Nation Native Americans (the unspoken American genocide). I stand with undocumented Immigrants (my forefathers, and likely yours, unless yours came on a slaveship). I stand with asylum seekers. I stand with those incarcerated for petty crimes that I, a middle aged white woman, would never be incarcerated for. I stand with the homeless. I stand with the hungry. I stand with the unemployed. I stand with frontline workers. I stand with sacrificial workers. I stand with women & children who are abused and brutalized. I protest.
I understand the looting - if you have no power, no voice, no privilege, no justice, and no respect, why not do a bit of looting if that's all you can do to get a little recourse. I oppose police brutality. I oppose racism. I oppose white supremacy. I oppose social injustice.
