😬😲😔... That feeling when you get 'caught short' with your waste
We're a bit spoiled in Brisbane, we have heaps of community composting hubs so it feels like you're never too far away from a solution when you have kitchen scraps that need to go somewhere, and our compost is just a few short steps from our kitchen, so we don't even really notice it. Putting our scraps in the compost is probablly about as automatic and straight forward as when we used to put them in the bin.
But when we spent several days on the Gold Coast away from our 'compost creature comforts' we had to figure out another way to deal with it on the fly - can't believe it hadn't crossed our minds to have a plan until we were elbow deep in mango peel and pips at Marnie's mum's place!
I searched online and checked the @sharewaste
app to find somewhere to take it, but to be honest there wasn't a great local option... so we stuffed it in the freezer to buy ourselves sometime ;) Then we realised, that that was our best solution all along! Where we would normally open the balcony door and drop our food scraps into our compost, we opened the freezer drawer and dropped them into a container. Simples!
Obviously this doesn't work if you're holidays are overseas or a long distance from home, but we were just an hour down the road so it worked for us. We transferred the frozen scraps to one of those reusable bags with the foil lining so it didn't leak and made a stop at our community garden on the way home to feed the compost bin! The best bit, Marnie finally got to see our little hub for the first time! Anything composty/planty in our house is a strictly 'me' job so she doesn't normally get involved ;) Got travel tips to get us out of a waste bind? Please share! .
