“Vasudaiva Kutumbakam” is a lofty Vedic philosophy that translates to “God’s world is one family”
In these times of a global pandemic we are reminded of the truth of this statement.
We are all connected, if one falls everyone else will fall also.
While the Vedas taught us luminous ideals, our Puranas, or treasure trove of stories, teach us to temper it with common sense.
We are guided by high ideals but without the brakes of practicality, we run ourselves into trouble soon.
Here is an ancient fable that goes in hand with the Vedic ideal.
Once upon a time in a #Forest
a deer was romping.
A jackal, who was visiting the forest, sees her and lusts for her flesh.
He steps out and praises the deer for her beauty, her grace, her elegant body.
He says sweetly “I am lost and looking for a place to stay, won’t you shelter me for a night?” The deer is impressed, being innocent and unsuspecting in nature.
As the deer and the jackal play and laugh, a crow spots them.
The crow is the deer’s best friend. She is alarmed.
She asks immediately. “Who is this stranger, deer?” The deer says “A lost soul looking for shelter, my new friend!” The crow replies:
~Do you know his family? ~Do you know his culture? ~Do you know his history? ~Do you know his values? ~have you let the friendship stand the test of time before inviting him home? (Online daters play close attention)
To which the jackal speaks at great length and finishes his sweet soliloquy with “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam” therefore trust me.
The deer is convinced this refined educated gentleman Jackal is a true friend, he even has mastery of the Vedas. What could go wrong?
Luckily the story ends with the crow saving the deer as the Jackal pounces on her.
Moral of the story, chanting #mantras
, doing #yoga
, following #Ayurveda
and quoting the #Vedas
do not confer spiritual qualities.
Before we open our heart or purses, let’s remember the crow’s #checklist
We are bombarded with people peddling all manners of solutions to our heightened collective experience of fear and anxiety.
More than ever we need to be vigilant.
