So both these movies essentially have the same themes so I wanted to just do a comparison of the two. The first movie is stand off staring @rajishavijayan @nimisha_sajayan
as the main strong, female protagonists that have to fight the system to get justice for a rape case as well.
The second movie staring @kiaraaliaadvani as the female lead also deals with rape but to another girl, but the accused her boyfriend.
Both discuss rape and how the Indian system deals and comes to term with the issue.
1. Stand up- good story line! Fantastic performance, it’s raw, gritty and it’s a realistic portrayal of trauma. The director uses stand up as a meanS to send out a strong message. I was really upset to see that there was not much promotion for such an important movie. It deal with male and female patriarchy, how women should bond together to fight the system, how we can all whether young, old, male, female all have a responsibility in looking after our women. And all done through a females perspective and how she copes with such a deeply traumatising event.
2. Now Guilty was a good attempt at the same thing. Kudos to Kiara for trying such a different role. Now, her character was repressed and was battling inner demons. This was portrayed really well and I actually wanted to see more of that story. I feel like Nanki’s story was just added on at the end when in reality that story line needed more time and empathy. However, I didn’t find the whole movie as easy to digest and then at the ending it seems as though it was too preachy. There was no subtleness to it at all.
It’s amazing to see how movies with same themes and message can be so different. Just really sad to see that movies like stand up don’t get the recognition it deserves! Overall amazing performances can be found in both movies !
