Yesterday was a fascinating day in many ways. We saw huge glaciers and epic scenery, watched some sea lions yell at each other, drank whiskey with ice from the glaciers and took a mini hike through Bernardo O’ Higgins park, but the most fascinating part for me was actually the people.
I don’t really know how to explain the level of humanity and just universal-ness that came through, but I think it is worth trying. The photo on the middle right is our table on the boat. The two men on the end were Swiss. They were from the area of Switzerland that speaks French and they were also completely deaf and using sign language the whole time. The couple on the left were from Chile and only spoke Spanish. Kathryn and I obviously speak English but she also knows French and we both know a little Spanish... so....that is the basis of our table. 4 languages and no one really spoke the same one. Between writing in French, drawing, some Form of charades, and Spanglish, it just worked though.
The Swiss guys taught us how to say USA and England in sign, as well as seal and waterfall and a few other things. They were named Christopher and Jacque Roland and Jacque Roland has motorcycled across Route 66 before in the states and was showing lots of photos. The Latino couple were Teresa and Maruano and they had been to Patagonia before and loved it there. They also had asked us about why we were in Chile and we tried our best to explain in the Spanish we had learned. Later, they asked us all if we were religious (in Spanish,) and when they went out for a cigarette, the Swiss guys joked with them in sign language how their religion may not approve... everyone some how understood each other and everyone laughed. It was truly incredible and kind of hard to really explain in words.
The glaciers and Patagonia were the perfect background for the day. The very windy and sometimes rainy weather just added to the fact that we had a longer conversation on the boat at times, which was worth it. It was definitely a magical weekend in #patagonia
