@theoceancleanup a Dutch non-profit initiative aiming to reducing the amount of plastic in the world's oceans by at least 90% by 2040 – launched its System 001 equipment, 600m U-shaped floating barrier with a 3m skirt, in the
#Pacific
Designed to be propelled by wind and waves, so it gathers plastic as it moves. It is equipped with solar-powered and satellite-connected sensors, cameras and navigation lights to communicate its position to passing marine traffic, and enable its’ monitoring.
The organization expects the first batches of plastic will be returned to land in six months, when the waste will be recycled into products that can be sold to help fund future operations. Hoping to send up to 60 numbers to the Great Pacific over the next 2 years.
The Ocean Cleanup projects with its full capacity can remove half of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years' time.
