Travel is one of the most-rewarding and life-enriching activities, but it also represents 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Metropolitan Touring, one of South America’s major travel companies, is now offering a great way to take carbon neutral trips.
How it Works
Once a traveler has booked a trip through @metropolitantouring
, the company calculates the carbon footprint for that specific trip and quotes the traveler for their offset. The price of the product depends on the type and length of the voyage, though an average 2-week trip is estimated at about $30 (including air travel to the Galapagos Islands). The entire investment goes towards the purchase and long-term lease of the forestlands in the Choco Bioregion, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. As this forest increases in size, health, and connectivity, it will absorb carbon dioxide, removing it from the air and helping mitigate climate change, as well as promoting biodiversity and respect for local communities in one of the world’s most fragile and pristine areas.
As well as owning and operating the @finchbayhotel
and three of the finest expedition ships in the Galapagos Islands (Yacht Isabela II, @yachtlapinta and the Santa Cruz II Cruise), @metropolitantouring is the holding company behind two other award-winning hotels in Ecuador; @casagangotena in Quito’s Old Town and @mashpilodge in the heart of the Andean cloud forest.
