Legendary (2018) second book of the YA fantasy trilogy: The Caraval Series by Stephanie Garber. The book starts the day after Caraval. The performers are heading to a place called Valenda for another round of Caraval. The sisters were invited to join them. Quite uncommon to have back to back Caraval, but it is Empress Elantine’s birthday. And it’s going to be epic. But, Donatella finds herself in a conundrum because she has made a dangerous bargain with a stranger. Which means risking her life to find out Master Legend’s real identity. And someone else’s identity whom she thought she had lost forever. .
Overall, I enjoyed this book. Focused more on Donatella. A new game, new setting, new intrigues. Just like the first, there are layers and entangled stories. You need to figure out where the truth lies. As much as this imaginative world and characters are engrossing, it also becomes “too much goings-on.” This book is a set-up to the next one, which maybe why there’s a lot of explanations. I would have preferred more action and leave a lot of the explanation to my imagination and interpretation. Also, I’m not a fan of “which love (man) is right for me” theme. Some parts had me questioning whether Donatella is truly a heroine in this story, because the guys always seemed present. Regardless, Garber had set-up the ending well enough that makes you wonder how it will all end for every character. She has made the world of Caraval magical once again. And this book leaves you hoping for more magic and fantastical themes. Also, I’m invested. .
