Brutal death metal isn't often my cup of tea, but when something slaps it slaps, and guess what?
This album? It slaps.
I had seen a ton of hype around this, some people even calling it album of the year, so I went into it with high expections, at first it seemed like really standard, boring, run of the mill BDM, but it grew on me very quickly. More and more interesting things show up over the run time and it kept me interested long enough for something to properly click around 5 tracks in.
Is this album of the year? In my books, no, never, not in a million years. Is it a really, really good piece of brutal death metal? Hell to the yes.
Meaty riffs with tremolo picking for flair, excellent drumming with trashcan snares, garbage disposal gutturals, nasty pinch harmonics and dissonant solos galore. Everything that makes a good brutal death metal album, and on top of that they switch things up just a bit often enough to make it not feel stale.
On one track, "A Prophetic Compulsion", they even seem to be trying to replicate Travis Ryan's iconic sing scream from the last 3 Cattle Decap records, how cute (Yes I'm including Death Atlas, bite my ass).
It's a genuinely nice surprise and makes it probably my favourite track on the album.
Overall, I don't quite get the hype, but it's a great album nonetheless.
