Nemophilist. (n.) a haunter of the woods; one who loves the forest, it’s beauty and solitude. 🌲
It’s not a very complicated core, in fact very simple to me. Still, I often meet people who have a really hard time understanding why... Going out alone into the woods walking or camping is not an attempt to be a rough lone wolf, go back in time, nor is it to be super fitness healthy or trying to be holy in any way. I’m not introvert, I don't hate other people or look down on others who have chosen a more modern life with lots of luxury or comfort. To some extend I have too when I’m home.
I just really like it out there. The calm silence. I found out many years ago. It’s just the best place for me to relax, think, & regain strength. I like the way time feels different when in nature. Everything slows down. Inside me as well. Especially when I’m alone. Nothing and no one to interfere with my thoughts. I need that.
Every little thing in my pockets or the rucksack is there for a reason, because I have to carry it on my back. That narrows everything down to a place between an absolute minimum and a chosen level of comfort. This simple thing affects everything else.
I like that I can feel everything in the environment there. All my senses are open. The durable old school gear I have is not just for showing, although I like how they feel and look esthetically - but in many ways most of it works far better and in more versatile ways a lot of the more modern high tech stuff. Not much is lightweight, so again; fewer things, just much more carefully selected. A few simple options in gear and tools demands a lot more of your skills, hands, imagination and the ability to improvise. In fact, just by beginning to narrow down what you need outdoors, you are more open to other solutions, searching for ideas or skills to acquire, more creative, crafty, more free... Freedom is a very precious thing in this world. And, in a modern society where everything is wrapped up in soft comfortable solutions all around you, freedom can sometimes take shape as the exact opposite thing. So think again. You have your reasons, I have mine. Nobody’s right or wrong. 🌲
